Fall plans may be filling your calendar, but hurricane season continues through November 30. For homeowners in Baton Rouge and beyond, this is a good time to revisit the basics before a storm becomes a last-minute scramble.
I like a short, manageable checklist. Start with these three areas, and keep the longer official guidance handy.
1. Revisit your household plan
Decide how you will receive weather alerts, where you would go if officials tell you to evacuate, and how you will reach each other. Include pets and anyone who may need transportation assistance. Keep key phone numbers on paper, too. Follow current instructions from local emergency officials; an old plan may need updating.
2. Refresh your supplies
Check water, shelf-stable food, flashlights, batteries, and phone chargers. Replace expired items and account for each household member’s needs. NOAA recommends at least three days of essential supplies, with additional water if possible. Put everything somewhere easy to find so you can see what is missing.
3. Organize your home records
Update photos of your rooms and belongings, and keep important documents accessible in a secure place. Ask your insurance professional to review your coverage and answer property-specific questions. If you notice a home repair concern, arrange qualified help before severe weather is approaching.
You do not have to tackle everything today. Choose one task, finish it, and put the next one on your calendar. Small steps now can make your preparations easier to manage.
