Fall in Baton Rouge is a good reminder to give your home a little attention before holiday plans take over. You do not need a long project list or a shopping cart full of supplies to get started.
I would begin with three simple checks that help you stay on top of everyday home care.
1. Check your home’s comfort basics
Look at your heating and cooling filter, and clean or replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Notice a draft around a door or window? Check for worn weatherstripping. Arrange professional heating-system maintenance if it is due, especially before you need the system regularly. Small observations now give you time to ask questions and plan repairs.
2. Make time for smoke alarms
Test smoke alarms every month, and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance and replacement instructions. Check the age of each unit instead of assuming a new battery solves everything. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing smoke alarms at ten years, with specific instructions for different alarm types. If you are unsure what you have, ask a qualified professional.
3. Turn observations into a short list
Walk through your home with your phone or a notebook. Record the filter size, service dates, and anything that needs a closer look. Separate simple tasks from work that needs a contractor. Give each item a realistic date rather than trying to finish everything in one weekend.
My favorite approach is consistency: a few manageable tasks, followed through, make home care easier to keep up with.
